Türkiye Hydrogen Technologies
Strategy and Roadmap

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources published the “Türkiye Hydrogen Technologies and Strategy Roadmap” in January 2023. In this Roadmap, hydrogen has been included in the list of priority areas within the scope of sustainable energy future and Türkiye’s short-, medium- and long-term targets have been determined, including the development of hydrogen technologies with domestic facilities to reach the 2053 Net Zero Carbon targets.

According to the published Hydrogen Technologies and Strategy Roadmap:

  • The aim is to reduce the production cost of green hydrogen produced by electrolyzer systems using renewable energy to below $2.4/kgH2 by 2035 and below $1.2/kg H2 by 2053.
  • Electrolyzer installed power capacity is intended to reach “2 GW in 2030, 5 GW in 2035 and 70 GW in 2053.

The Hydrogen Technologies and Strategy Roadmap outlines the following policies:

  • Review and update the legislation on the production, transportation, storage and utilization of hydrogen,
  • Develop mechanisms to incentivize the use of domestic components for green hydrogen production and storage,
  • Establishing “green hydrogen” certification programs and ensuring the traceability of these programs,
  • Supporting R&D and product development activities to develop domestic and national electrolyzer, fuel cell, etc. technologies,
  • Realization of research and development projects for hydrogen and synthetic gas production from lignite and organic waste,
  • Developing supply chain and trade opportunities by establishing international collaborations in industry, technology, standards and certification,
  • Establishing public and private sector partnerships to increase commercial demand and investment,
  • Expanding the use of green hydrogen in sectors such as chemicals, iron and steel, transportation, glass, ceramics, etc., which are difficult to reduce carbon emissions,
  • Increasing green hydrogen production by increasing the production and utilization of renewable energy,
  • Training qualified manpower in the field of hydrogen technologies,
  • Contributing to the gradual decarbonization of the heat sector by blending hydrogen into existing natural gas lines,
  • Utilization of domestic resources, especially boron, in hydrogen storage,
  • Exporting surplus green hydrogen and ammonia to European markets to be produced with our domestic technologies.

The objectives and policies outlined in the published “Türkiye Hydrogen Technologies and Strategy Roadmap” provide a robust framework for the development of hydrogen technologies and emphasize the need for efficient use of domestic resources. Increasing investments in hydrogen technologies and realizing innovative solutions will not only play a critical role in Türkiye’s future energy transformation but will also contribute to ensuring environmental sustainability.
